Thanks for your quick reply, Mark! I will take a deeper look at your list of suggestions above, I basically killed our cedar hedges because I can’t justify wasting water on a shrub so poorly suited to our climate! 🙂

We have just added boxwood to the plant database. It is not as drought resistant as caragana but it is a lot better than cedar. It is relatively slow growing, however.

Ideally I’d like to replace my cedars with a dense privacy hedge that requires zero watering. I had also considered caragana, as I have seen that commonly used in the prairies so I figured it would be drought friendly.

Hi Deb… You can start overseeding with the clover starting in April and repeat again in the Fall. Overseeding in the summer will not be as succesful due to heat and water constrictions.

April is a good time to lay the seed down. You’ll want to cover it if you have quail in your area. It’s fairly quick to germinate as soon as the warmth comes.

Catherine… Rocks will throw too much heat. Yarrow is a better way to go.

Hello Catherine, I would suggest planting yarrow as it is a native plant and would spread around the rocky areas. We will have yarrow at our Spring Plant Sale.
